The Secret to Choosing the Right Pest Control Company

By Clean Crawls on October 17, 2017

There are a lot of situations where you may need to hire a pest control company. Common plagues like mice, rats, stinging insects, spiders, roaches and even bats can cause damage to your home and health, and often require professional treatment. Whether you are a homeowner or a real estate agent, picking the right pest control company can be tricky. There are so many to choose from, and they all claim to be the best. So, what’s the secret to picking the right one?

Choosing the Right Pest Control Company

Here are just a few tips on how to make sure that the company you hire is trustworthy, qualified and the right one for you!

Check Out Their Reviews

The internet can be a fantastic tool when doing research on a new company. Look them up. Read reviews online, on their social media pages and other accounts. If you know other people who have used their services, ask what they thought. Word-of-mouth and endorsements from people you trust can be great evidence as to whether or not this company is worth the money and time.

Check out their Better Business Bureau profile or contact your state pesticide regulatory agency to find out if they’ve been in violation of any rules lately. Ask the company for any customer references they can provide. Do your homework – most pest problems aren’t at a crisis point when you discover them, and can wait a day or two while you do some digging.

Ask Questions

As with any major decision, ask questions before you hire a pest control company. Here are a few to consider:

1. What are Their Qualifications?

Do they carry the proper insurance? Are their technicians current on their licenses? Is the person administering the pesticides be appropriately licensed? You can verify licensing with your state pesticide regulatory agency.

2. What is Their Experience Level?

How long have they been in business? How long have they been treating your specific type of pest problem? Are new technicians trained by and/or apprenticed to more experienced employees before being sent out on their own? Verify how long they’ve been in business and how long they have been licensed.

3. What is the Value?

Price-wise, how do they compare to other businesses in the area? What are they offering for the price they’re asking? Of course, this, like any other purchase, is a balance between lowest cost and the best quality – don’t compromise on either one! Sometimes it is better to pay a little more than you planned, rather than pay less than you should. You get what you pay for, and you don’t get what you don’t pay for.

4. How is Their Customer Service?

When you contact them, how are you treated? Are they willing to listen, ask questions and help, or are they rude and condescending? When the technician comes for an estimate, are they dressed professionally and do they behave politely? How long does it take them to get back to you for estimates or scheduling an appointment? Although online reviews and testimonials might be useful indicators, the true test is how they behave with you personally on an individual basis.

5. Safety & Environmental Impact

This is an important one to ask. Is the company willing to try low-toxicity options for pest control first? What methods do they use, and what precautions do they take to prevent dangerous exposures to pesticides? Do their employees follow good practices with protective clothing? How dedicated are they to providing safe options for their services? This can be especially important if you have pets or young children.

The Secret to Choosing the Right One

Don’t cave to pressure! Don’t let a company push you into signing a contract or agreeing to a service if you are uncomfortable with any of their answers. As mentioned before, many pest problems can wait a few days or more before treatment. Also, just because you have been with another company for a long time does not mean they are still providing the same level of service they were when you began. Do your own research and don’t agree to something that doesn’t meet your values.

Choosing the right pest control company comes down to evaluating the business on these things:
