Why Is Spray Foam Best For Your Crawl Space Insulation?

By Mike on September 18, 2014

At Clean Crawls, we see a lot of crawl spaces in the Greater Seattle area. While some of these are well-tended and well-insulated, others are in complete disarray when we first walk onto the scene.

But after our team of crawl space experts walk off your property—we leave behind a completely cleaned and insulated crawl space that will last you for years to come, saving energy, protecting your air quality, and keeping your home safe.

Our favorite insulation to use in the crawl space is closed-cell spray foam insulation. Why? Read on.

What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray foam insulation is made from two types of composite material. The first material is polyurethane, and the second is isocyanate. These two ingredients, when sprayed from the tip of the spray foam gun, will combine, creating a chemical reaction that causes the substance to expand and then harden.

Why is Spray Foam Insulation so effective in the crawl space?

1. Air-tight Seal

Closed-cell spray foam insulation creates an airtight seal. Air leaks can contribute nearly as much to your utility bill as insufficient insulation can. By closing those air gaps, you save energy, money and you increase the air quality in your home by preventing that unfiltered air from circulating.

2. Moisture Barrier

Closed-cell spray foam insulation is impermeable to water. So, if a leak occurs or there is some flooding in the area, the spray foam insulation will not absorb any of the moisture. Additionally, everything that is covered will be protected from the moisture as well. Because 90% of the moisture in your home is airborne, this prevents moisture accumulation or permeation extremely well.

3. Deters Mold Growth

Because spray foam insulation is made from an inert polymer, it provides no food source for mold or bacteria. In an area well known for mold growth, this provides an invaluable benefit to your crawl space, and ultimately, your home.

Remember that a very large percentage of your indoor air quality depends upon the cleanliness of your crawl space, and mold and mildew growth greatly diminish the safety of the air quality of your home.

4. Highest R-Value on the Market

The most advantageous aspect of spray foam insulation is its incredible insulating properties. Closed-cell spray foam insulation has the highest R-value of any insulation on the market today, at R-6 per inch.

Because the spray foam insulation expands as it cures, it fills in all the nooks and crannies that would otherwise be left open for heat transfer. Once cured, the spray foam has created an air tight seal against all incoming hot or cold air. While other types of insulation, such as fiberglass, are still permeable to winds, the seal of spray foam insulation is 24 times less permeable to air infiltration than other types of insulation.

Because of the superior insular qualities of foam insulation, energy savings are proportionally superior as well. An area insulated with other types of insulation such as fiberglass or cellulose will give you an average of 30% cost savings. Spray foam insulation provides cost savings at a consistent rate of 50% or more.
